Helping Families in Ramadan

No one should be without food during Ramadan. Please make a contribution to help fight food insecurity for Muslim families this Ramadan. Please donate today. 100% of your gift will go toward providing families with culturally-appropriate shelf-stable, nourishing food products for the month of Ramadan.

Ramadan is the holiest month of the Islamic calendar. For 29 days, Muslims abstain from food and water during the day. Muslims wake early each morning before the sun to take a light breakfast, called suhoor, before their day-long fast. After the sun is set families traditionally gather to break their fast in a meal called iftar, before spending the evening in worship. These morning and evening meals are important forms of nourishment. But for many Muslim families in Tucson, nutritious and culturally-appropriate meals are out of reach. The Muslim Community Alliance is working with our partners across the community to provide food security to Muslim families during Ramadan. This effort is especially important as COVID-19 continues to obstruct community iftars, traditionally held at the mosque, which many families rely on for daily meals.

Tucson has the fourth-highest level of food insecurity in the nation. More than 13% of Tucson residents face temporary or sustained concerns about food. Many families from the Muslim community are especially at risk. In April of 2020, MCA organizers spearheaded a COVID-19 Relief Program and found that approximately 15% of the Muslim population in Pima County faced financial difficulty as a result of COVID-19. Since then, Tucson has seen an influx of Muslim refugees from Afghanistan, Somalia, and Syria who will benefit from food relief during Ramadan.

This program will provide Muslim families with culturally-appropriate shelf-stable, nourishing food products for the month of Ramadan. We invite you to join this effort to maximize the impact and ensure that every Muslim household has access to nourishing food to sustain them through the Holy month.

The estimated cost to feed one family of four people for the month of Ramadan is $100. Our expectations are for at least 120 family requests, but we are aware that this number could reach as high as 350. Any contribution that you give will make a huge difference for these families in need.
